What does the rise of China represent, and how should the international community respond? With a holistic rereading of Chinese longue durée history, Fei-Ling Wang provides a simple but powerful framework for understanding the nature of persistent and rising Chinese power and its implications for the current global order. He argues that the Chinese ideation and tradition of political governance and world order—the China Order—is based on an imperial state of Confucian-Legalism as historically exemplified by the Qin-Han polity. Claiming a Mandate of Heaven to unify and govern the whole known world or tianxia (all under heaven), the China Order dominated Eastern Eurasia as a world empire for more than two millennia, until the late nineteenth century. Since 1949, the People’s Republic of China has been a reincarnated Qin-Han polity without the traditional China Order, finding itself stuck in the endless struggle against the current world order and the ever-changing Chinese society for its regime survival and security. Wang also offers new discoveries and assessments about the true golden eras of Chinese civilization, explains the great East-West divergence between China and Europe, and analyzes the China Dream that drives much of current Chinese foreign policy.

This may be the first book to uncover the strategic intent of the rising china from the perspective of ‘the China Order’, the idealization of international relations as conceived or imagined by the Chinese people. Put simply, this is how the Chinese people understand international relations. According to the author, the China Order which represents an authoritarian and usually totalitarian global order, is the order of Chinese empire. It began in the Qin-Han Polity, developed and consolidated through centuries of dynastic rules and indoctrination. Wang explicates the evolution and nature of China Order by re-examining and re-interpreting the histories of china at great length.

After all, Wang unequivocally asserts that the rising China is surely a revisionist power, a stark oppositional force against the post-war American-led liberal international world order. As a political ideology and entrenched tradition of the Chinese people, the China Order is still alive and affecting the behaviors and policy preferences of the current PRC leaders. Accordingly, President Xi’s China Dream is in reality a manifestation and regeneration of the China Order. Thus, the national regeneration of the Chinese people naturally pushes the rising China to the direction of seeking regional hegemony in the same way as the Chinese empire ruled over the then known world many centuries ago.

The extent to what the current Chinese leaders embrace Wang’s China Order is surely uncertain. However, for the sake of regime survival, pursuing regional hegemony may be the surest way to find a place safe for PRC authoritarianism if power allows. On the other hand, highlighting the idea of China Order only gives the impression of a propaganda campaign for boosting the ‘China Threat’.

빵의 가격을 말할 때, 빵 전체를 의미하는 게 아니라, 한 조각의 빵의 가격을 말하는 것이다. 이는 고센의 첫번째 법칙에서 추론된 게 아니라, 행동의 본질에 대한 성찰에서 도출되었다.

자본주의적 생산 방식은 무엇보다도 경제적 계산을 필요로 한다.

만일 생산에서 경제적 계산이 사라지면, 인간은 원시적인 경작 상태로 돌아가고 만다. 그런데 생산 수단의 화폐 가격은 오직 사유재산이 보장되는 시장에서만 형성되므로, 이로써 사회주의가 성립할 수 없다는 것이 증명된다.

경제적 계산은 인간의 행동을 안내하는 결정에서 기본 자료이다. 완전하지는 않지만 분업에 바탕을 둔 사회에서는 투입과 산출을 비교하는 유일한 방법이다.
