미국 스탠퍼드대 교육대학원 부학장인 폴 김(46·사진) 교수의 경험담이다. 이를 통해 티칭(Teaching)이 아니라 코칭(Coaching)의 중요성을 깨달은 그는 “학생의 강점과 약점을 파악하고 개별적 상황에 따라 (학습)동기를 유발하는 것이 교사의 역할”이라며 “교사와 학생은 수직적 상하관계가 되기보다는 함께 생각하고 문제를 푸는 ‘파트너’가 돼야 한다”고 강조했다. 최근 ‘교육의 미래, 티칭이 아니라 코칭이다’라는 신간을 내 방한한 그를 만나봤다.

◇조언 1_ 절대 가르치지 마라
스탠퍼드대 교육대학원은 새로운 교육 시스템을 개발하고 기술을 활용해 미래형 교육환경을 디자인하는 분야에서 전 세계적으로 인정받고 있다. 그곳에서 김 교수는 새로운 형태의 수업을 만들고 강의하며 필요한 곳에 보급하는 역할을 맡았다. 이를 위해 27개국을 돌며 그가 얻은 교훈은 ‘교사는 절대 가르쳐서는 안 된다’는 사실이다. 이를 바탕으로 만든 ‘SMILE(Stanford Mobile Inquiry-based Learning Environment) 프로젝트’는 2016년 유엔 미래교육혁신기술로 선정된 바 있다.

김 교수는 “학생에게 설명하고 가르치면 가르칠수록, 학생은 스스로 생각할 기회를 잃어버린다”고 단언했다. 그는 “과거엔 지식의 원천이 전달자인 교수나 교사였지만, 기술이 발전한 지금의 교육 주체는 학습자”라며 “교육 주도권은 반드시 학생에게 있어야 한다”고 지적했다.

“교사는 학생 개개인의 역량을 잘 알지 못해도 얼마든지 가르칠 수 있지만, ‘코치’는 다릅니다. 학생 한 명 한 명을 팀원으로 보기 때문에 각각의 장단점을 정확히 알고 있어야 해요. 아이들 개개인이 최상의 역량을 발휘할 수 있도록 돕는 코치만이 4차 산업혁명 시대에도 대체되지 않고 살아남을 것이라 확신합니다.”

하지만 아쉽게도 지금 우리나라 교육 현장에는 여전히 교사만이 가득하다. 김 교수는 “아직도 암기식·주입식 교육에 젖은 한국은 코치가 양성되지 않는 구조”라며 “제가 학교에 다니던 시기나 지금이나 여전히 주입식 교육이 진행되는 것 같아 안타깝다”고 말했다. 그는 그 이유의 하나로 ‘교사가 가진 두려움’을 꼽았다.

내가 <서구의학은 파산했다>에서 주장했듯이, 지금의 의학을 한의학을 중심으로 개편하면, 굳이 국가가 개입하지 않아도, 국민들은 싸고 효과적인 한의학 치료를 받을 수 있다. 서구 의학은 병도 고치지 못하면서, 고가의 치료비를 받고 있다. 미국이나 기타 국가에서 알 수 있듯이, 건강보험은 밑 빠진 독에 물 붓기이다.

일본에서 침구를 도입한 이후로, 의료비가 낮아졌다는 글을 어디에선가 읽은 적이 있다.
한약, 침술, 구(灸), 안마를 비롯한 각종 수기(手技) 치료, 음식 요법, 한두 가지의 약재를 이용한 건강 요법 등 한방 치료의 종류는 너무나 많다.

越婢湯

 

【方劑組成】麻黃18克石膏45～100克生薑9克 炙甘草6克大棗5枚

 

【方解】此亦同麻杏甘石湯，為外邪內熱的治劑。但無杏仁則治喘的作用較弱，但有生薑大棗則健胃逐水的作用加強，余則大同小異。

 

《金匱要略•水氣病》第21條：風水，惡風，一身悉腫，脈浮不渴，續自汗出，無大熱，越婢湯主之。

 

註解：外邪而又水腫者謂風水。惡風、脈浮為外邪；一身盡腫為水氣。續自汗出無大熱，與麻杏甘石湯證的汗出無大熱者同。津液未至虛損故不渴，宜越婢湯主之。

 

按：水氣在表，法當發汗，但津液虛損者不可發汗，故《金匱要略》有「渴而下利，小便數者，皆不可發汗」之戒。脈浮不渴，正是本方發汗的關鍵，後世誤於石膏治渴，而把脈浮不渴，改為脈浮而渴，大錯。其實石膏除熱並不一定渴，口舌干而煩躁者即可用之。若真大渴欲飲，乃津液傷損之候，須合用人參方能有濟，詳見白虎加人參湯條，互參自明。又《金匱要略•水氣病》篇對於風水是這樣說的：「風水，其脈自浮，外證骨節疼煩，惡風」。本條所述以續自汗出，故骨節不疼。若無汗而疼煩，當屬大青龍湯證，而不可與本方，須知。

 

【辨證要點】周身浮腫、脈浮、惡風者。

 

【驗案】佟某，男性，63歲，初診日期：1965年7月6日。因慢性腎炎住某醫院，治療三月效果不佳，尿蛋白波動在(++)～(+++)之間，無奈要求服中藥治療。四肢及顏面皆腫，皮膚灰黑，腹大臍平，近幾日不能飲食，小便量少，汗出不惡寒，苔白膩，脈沉細。此屬水飲內停，外邪不解，郁久化熱，為越婢湯方證：

 

麻黃12克生薑10克大棗4枚生石膏45克炙甘草6克大棗5枚

 

結果：上藥服一劑，小便即增多，喜進飲食，繼服20余劑，浮腫、腹水消，尿蛋白(一)，病癒出院。

 

 

 

 

六、越婢加術湯

【方劑組成】麻黃18克石膏45-100克生薑9克炙甘草6克大棗5枚白朮12克

 

【方解】此于越婢湯加利小便逐濕痹的術，故治越婢湯證而小便不利或濕痹痛者。

 

《金匱要略•水氣病》第5條：里水者，一身面目黃腫，其脈沉，小便不利，故令病水。假令小便自利，此亡津液，故令渴也，越婢加術湯主之。

 

註解：黃腫，指水腫微發黃色，為水因熱蒸之象，不是黃疸。一身面目黃腫，謂全身以及面目俱發黃腫。脈沉為里有水飲之應，小便不利則水不得排泄而外溢，故令病水。假使小便頻利，此亡津液，則只能病渴而不能病水。病水者越婢加術湯主之。

 

按：《金匱要略•水氣病》篇只有風水、皮水、正水、石水和黃汗五種，本條的里水是就病水的原因說的，亦即對風氣相擊的風水說的。風水可說是外因，此則由於小便不利為內因，故以里水別之。注家改為皮水，值得考究。實踐證明，本方所主水腫證，亦以腎機能障礙而致者為多，對於腎炎患者的水腫和腹水屢試皆驗，尤其令人驚異者，不但水腫消除，即使腎炎本病亦得到徹底治癒。

 

《金匱要略•水氣病》第23條：里水，越婢加術湯主之；甘草麻黃湯亦主之。

 

註解：就治里水這一點。則越婢加術湯和甘草麻黃湯均有應用的機會，但並不同主一證，臨證時宜依證選其一而用之。

 

《金匱要略•中風歷節病》附方：《千金方》越婢加術湯，治肉極，熱則身體津脫，腠理開，汗大泄，厲風氣，下焦腳弱。

 

【註解】肉變色多汗謂肉極；痛引肩背不可以動轉謂為厲風，下焦腳弱即腳氣一類病。

 

按：實踐證明，越婢加術附湯治腰腳麻痹、下肢痿弱、以及關節疼痛而有水氣留滯者有驗，故《千金方》所謂「厲風氣，下焦腳弱」之治，宜越婢加術附湯為是。然肉極之證宜本方可信。

 

【辨證要點】越婢加術湯用於越婢湯方證見小便不利、或濕痹痛者。

 

【驗案】宋某，男性，19歲，病歷號183376，1966年

 

3月18日初診。半月來發燒，服A．P．c熱不退，漸出現眼瞼浮腫，經某醫院檢查尿蛋白＋＋＋＋、紅血球滿視野，管型2～4，囑住院治療。因無錢，經人介紹而來門診治療。症見：頭面及四肢浮腫，頭痛發熱(T38～38．5℃)，小便少，甚則一日一行，苔白膩．脈沉滑。此屬外寒里飲，治以解表利水。予越婢加術湯；

 

麻黃12克生薑10克大棗4枚炙甘草6克生石膏45克蒼朮12克

 

結果：上藥服二劑後，浮腫大減，尿量增多，三劑後腫全消，六劑後尿蛋白減為+。因出現腰痛，合服柴胡桂枝幹薑湯，不及一月尿蛋白即轉為陰性。休息一月即參加工作。1966年12月6日複查尿常規全部正常。

 

【方劑組成】麻黃18克生薑9克炙甘草6克大棗5枚生石膏45～100克半夏15克

 

【方解】此于越婢湯更加逐飲下氣的半夏，故治越婢湯證而有痰飲、咳逆上氣者。

 

《金匱要略•肺痿肺癰咳嗽上氣病》第13條：咳而上氣，此為肺脹，其人喘，目如脫狀，脈浮大者，越婢加半夏湯主

 

註解：熱壅飲逆復兼外邪，故咳而上氣，則為肺脹。其人喘，目如脫狀，亦邪逆氣壅所致。脈浮大為外邪內熱之應，故以越婢加半夏湯主之。

 

按：肺脹為病名，《金匱要略》日：「上氣，喘而躁者，屬肺脹」。可見肺脹即指上氣咳逆、喘而躁急的證候。曾以本方用於咳逆喘急、目突如脫者，確實有驗。

 

【辨證要點】越婢湯證兼見咳逆上氣、兩目發脹或頭痛

 

【驗案】詹某，女性，39歲，病歷號132122，1964年10月12日初診。昨晚受涼，咽痛，咳喘，喉中痰鳴，服氨茶鹼兩片喘稍緩解，但仍咳重，咳則兩眼發脹、頭痛，自感呼吸不暢，苔白膩．脈浮弦。此屬外寒內熱而致肺氣不降，治以散寒清熱，與越婢加半夏湯：

 

麻黃12克生石膏45克炙甘草6克大棗5枚半夏12克杏仁lO克

 

結果：上藥服二劑咳喘減、咽痛、目脹、頭痛已，繼服二劑諸症皆消。

越婢湯以麻黃、石膏為主藥，輔以甘草、生薑、大棗，主治風水證，有發汗利水之功效，歷來均無疑義，並為臨床實踐所證實。但其方的命名頗讓人疑惑，與仲景其餘經方或以主藥為名、或以功用表示的命名原則明顯不符，尤其是「婢」字難以理解。

 

時人郭秀梅與岡田研吉曾匯集日本江戶時期三十多位醫家、六十多部著作中有關《傷寒論》文字的解釋和考證，編撰為《日本醫家傷寒論註解輯要》一書，其中有專篇釋「越婢」二字，引證中日十餘家說法，頗為全面。有釋「發越脾氣」者(成無己)，有釋「發越之力，若婢子之職狹小」者(吳人駒)，有將「婢」釋為「陰」、「少」者(方有執)，有以「婢」喻方藥「柔緩之性」者(喻昌)，有認為「婢」即「脾」傳寫之誤者(喜多村直寬)，有認為此方「以治越人之婢而得效」者(錢天來)，有認為「越婢」即「越醫」者(山田正珍)，聚訟紛紛，終無定論。

 

近人的研究文章不多見，代表性的如江幼李將「越婢」釋為「治脾」，柏德新釋為「開肺之鬱閉」，過偉峰釋為「越卑」等說。但上述諸說均主要從醫理論之，難脫前人窠臼，並缺乏基礎性的訓詁學支持，因此缺憾亦十分明顯，反而使得對「越婢湯」方名的理解更加複雜而本義不彰。

 

惟有日人森立之所著《枳園叢考》，對「越婢湯」方名從文字學和訓詁學角度作了比較完善的考證，提出「越婢湯」當為「越痹湯」，其結果相對可信。現將其論據簡述於下，並從近年來新出土的醫學文獻資料和醫理兩方面補證之。

타일러 코원이란 경제학자가 '이야기'의 위험성에 대해 말한다.
이야기는 세상을 선악으로 구분하거나 음모론으로 바라보기도 한다. 하지만 세상은 그보다 복잡하고 문제 역시 복잡다단한 경우가 더 많다. 또는 이야기를 통해 상품을 팔아먹는다든지 등 자신의 목적을 달성하기 위해 이야기를 동원한다.

지난 촛불 난동도, 청와대의 부패한 대통령이 간사한 측근의 간언에 속아넘어가, 이권을 주거나 나누어 가졌다는 흔한 이야기였다.

일부 국민은 이런 이야기를 쉽게 믿었고 이성적인 생각을 포기한 채 선동에 휩쓸려 갔다.

Fractal planting patterns yield optimal harvests, without central control

 

 

 

 

Bali's famous rice terraces, when seen from above, look like colorful mosaics because some farmers plant synchronously, while others plant at different times. The resulting fractal patterns are rare for man-made systems and lead to optimal harvests without global planning.

 

To understand how Balinese rice farmers make their decisions for planting, a team of scientists led by Stephen Lansing (Nanyang Technological University) and Stefan Thurner (Medical University of Vienna, Complexity Science Hub Vienna, IIASA, SFI), both external faculty at the Santa Fe Institute, modeled two variables: water availability and pest damage. Farmers that live upstream have the advantage of always having water; while those downstream have to adapt their planning on the schedules of the upstream farmers.

 

Here, pests enter the scene. When farmers are planting at different times, pests can move from one field to another, but when farmers plant in synchrony, pests drown and the pest load is reduced. So upstream farmers have an incentive to share water so that synchronous planting can happen. However, water resources are limited and there is not enough water for everybody to plant at the same time. As a result of this constraint, fractal planting patterns emerge, which yield close to maximal harvests.

 

"The remarkable finding is that this optimal situation arises without central planners or coordination. Farmers interact locally and take local individual free decisions, which they believe will optimize their own harvest. And yet the global system works optimally," says Lansing. "What is exciting scientifically is that this is in contrast to the tragedy of the commons, where the global optimum is not reached because everyone is maximizing his individual profit. This is what we are experiencing typically when egoistic people are using a limited resource on the planet, everyone optimizes the individual payoff and never reach an optimum for all," he says.

 

The scientists find that under these assumptions, the planting patterns become fractal, which is indeed the case as they confirm with satellite imagery. "Fractal patterns are abundant in natural systems but are relatively rare in man-made systems," explains Thurner. These fractal patterns make the system more resilient than it would otherwise be. "The system becomes remarkably stable, again without any planning—stability is the outcome of a remarkably simple but efficient self-organized process. And it happens extremely fast. In reality, it does not even take ten years for the system to reach this state," Thurner says.

 

Spatial patterning often occurs in ecosystems as a self-organizing process caused by feedback between organisms and the physical environment. "The centuries-old Balinese rice terraces are also created by feedback between farmer's decisions and the ecology, which triggers a transition from local to global scale control," explains Lansing. "Our model shows for the first time that adaptation in a coupled human-natural system can trigger self-organized criticality."

 

The Balinese rice fields could serve as an example that under certain conditions it is possible to reach sustainable situations that lead to maximum payoff for all parties, wherein every individual makes free and independent decisions.
